Can Someone Explain all the Neighborhoods of NYC? I live in Nebraska and i’m moving to new york soon. im looking for an apartment, but i have absolutely no idea what part of the city i should live in. i keep seeing all these names like manhattan, bronx, staten island, brooklyn, queens, chelsea, tribeca, gramercy, midtown, downtown, uptown, roosevelt island, upper east side, upper west side, lower west side, lower east side. I AM SO CONFUSED. i just need someone to straighten things out for me please.
Neighborhoods of NEW YORK CITY?
where in manhattan should i live?
ok so i got into columbia and scholarships to parsons and the fashion institute of technology so i will be living in new york but dont wan to live on campus i want to live in an appartment. i have vissited NYC before but dont know where it is best to live. i would like somewhere uptown or midtown maybe. it has to have good stores and boutiques near by and it has to be safe and not a place where there are a bunch of hobos around. i also dont like places with gross little bars and pubs with cheap beer i would rather there be nice restaurants with fine wine.
PS cost isnt a very big issue i dont want a big penthouse just a smaller apartment i vas thinking between 2,000 to 4,500 dollars per month but nothing under 1000 dollars
What would you do in this situation… re my living situation?
My boss offered me to sublet her 2 bedroom loft apartment in NYC (Chelsea) for 1000 a month! (it’s rent controlled) I’d have it indefinately since she bought someplace uptown. This is an AMAZING deal. I have 2 problems:
1. i just moved in with a good friend 8 months ago and i have 8 months left in our lease. We sublet from her cousin so i think i could get out of it but my friend would get pissed.
2. It may be awkward to rent from my boss, what if i quit? Or get fired?
I really want to move to NYC!!! im tired of commuting and the rent is cheaper than what i pay now! What to do???
Should I take ex-roomate to small claims court over not refunding deposit?
I moved to NYC on approximately 9/20/06, subletting a space in an apartment uptown. We had a contract, which was signed by both parties stating that I would be living in the apartment from 9/20/06 until 12/01/06. Deposit was to be refunded by the time I moved out, which was in contract. I kept the copy we signed, and she filled in her own copy, sans the signatures.
She required First month’s rent, and deposit, which totalled $1340 ($670 + $670). This was paid, as was the second and last payment on 10/20 (covered to 12/01).
Fast-forward to 11/30, I moved my stuff out. I ask her when I can pick up deposit. She tells me “Oh sorry, I can’t get you the entire deposit, only half.” I drop the keys off the next day, and I see $250 on the desk, which is LESS than half.
Its now 04/16. I’ve since moved out. She’s given me excuse after excuse. I told her I would be consulting with my attorney, shes left contentious messages.
Will I have a problem taking her to small claims for $420 she owes?
Excuses include: “I had to use your deposit to pay for rent.” This in of itself is disconcerting, because then I was essentially paying for her rent.
She promised an amount before the XMas holidays, but nada. Then she claimed she got robbed just after New Years.
Her latest excuse is that she got run over by a car. Seems rather pathetic to me, and I haven’t received a SINGLE penny to-date.
My issue is: on the first check I wrote, I didn’t specify “Rent + Deposit”… I recall only specifying the rent period. But I do have the contract nevertheless. Will this be enough leverage?
Also, I have recorded her nasty messages where she admitted to spending my deposit to pay for rent, WITHOUT telling me about it.
Do I have a case? Can she flip this in her favor at all?
Oh, and I adhered to everything in the contract.
NYC Locals Only Pls: What is the demo for people moving into those new developments in Harlem?
I am a black/hispanic young professional, single looking for a safe building in uptown Manhattan. Are there many people of color that rent these apartments in these new developments? Or is it mostly caucasian people from downtown or transplants from other states?
I am asking because I don’t want to be the only minority in one of these buildings and I’m wondering if many races live there together are there any tensions?
Also, did you get the apt through brokers or how did you get the apartment if you didn’t use a broker? Did you apply directly to the company?
Thx
Problems with the super and landlord NYC?
Hello,
My mother and I live in an apartment in uptown and we are having some problems.
The apartment was passed down to us from my grand parents and is an old building.
Like all old buildings do this one has many problems some of the issues include:
–no intercom
–the building door is not locked
– There are no cameras
–the roof door is always open
–the walls of the apt haven’t been painted in the 9 years we been living there
– The walls are a crack in some places
– And every time water spills it goes straight to the apartment below
This are some of them you can imagine the rest.
We constantly ask the super to fix some of this problems but he never does.
His excuse is to bring it to curt if we want to cause he is not going to do nothing about it.
He says I party too much and he got complains from the other tenants, also once the hand washer broke and he took pictures but didn’t fix it saying that he going to use it in curt if we take him to curt.
So what can I do about it?
I do party every weekend. But is because I work and study on the week days and on the weekends I like to let loose.
Also he adds that we are renting rooms and he will bring it up in curt.
We do rent a room but is a friend of mine who was living with us for free but now has a job and decide to put up some money.
Ok if their name is not on the lease, but mine is not because i have the right as i am family of the tenant right?
it doesn’t make any difference how long i know him for and that if i ask him to leave he would have to stay on the street?

What are some good sites (other than craigslist) to find no fee apartments in NYC?
I’m looking for some good, free sites to find a no fee apartment in New York City. I’m looking for a small studio or one bedroom, preferably Uptown in the area of Washington Heights or Inwood.
